Mary Isabella Shields Pyle "Mamie" helped to win women the right to vote in South Dakota in 1918. She was president of the Universal Franchise League in South Dakota.
John Levis Pyle served the State of South Dakota as Attorney General (1899-1902).
Gladys Pyle, daughter of John and Mamie, was the first woman elected to the South Dakota Legislature and the first woman to hold a constitutional office as Secretary of State. She was also the first woman in the nation elected to the United States Senate. photo by Sid Glanzer
